Hoop Dreams follows the budding careers of two basketball talents - William Gates and Arthur Agee. The film stops as the boys start up college. I'm trying to dig up what happened to them in the mean time. William Gates is, interestingly enough, a minister in Chicago. His older brother, Curtis, also featured in the film, was killed by a car jacker after the movie was completed.
Also interestingly, the article notes that for a brief period, Gates almost went into the NBA as he was invited by Michael Jordon to try out for the Wizards. He did well, but then a string of injuries sidelined him. If you remember from the film, it was repeated injuries to his knee which seemed to begin his disillusionment with professional basketball, in general.
