I wonder how Adam Sandler's movie 50 First Dates will fare against The Passion, which opens today. You'd think that, on the one hand, the target audiences for these two films are completely different. Sandler's movie might do very well going into this weekend, even, because it's hard to imagine The Passion as the ideal date movie, or even the movie of choice for a bunch of horny teenage boys.
But, at the same time, that might not be true. This movie is the most talked about movie of the year, and I can imagine everyone wanting to see this movie if for no other reason than to want to be able to participate in water cooler conversations with other people. Plus, the extreme violence might actually draw teens in - this is not a placid "religious" movie but is a violent, historical drama about a man about whom everyone is familar, but possibily few understand.
I may go see it tonight, if there's a midnight showing. I figure I should go only after the family is in bed. But, I have a feeling that it's going to be sold out, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a ticket.
